BMW E36 Gauge Ring Install & Cluster Removal

Upgrading to chrome or aluminum gauge rings on your E36 gives you the M3 look (M5, too!) for pretty cheap, the rings use to cost a lot but now we buy so many at once we are able to sell them for cheap and still buy lunch every day.

It’s optional to remove steering wheel, makes it easier but not completely necessary.
Unscrew screws and lift out instrument cluster upwards slightly and pull forward as far as steering column.
Caution!
Place cleaning rags on steering column to avoid scratches in glass of instrument carrier.

Push levers on connectors forward and take out connectors.
Installation:
When inserting a connector, lever must be in forward position.
Recode instrument carrier if you are replacing it, not necessary if you are plugging back in the same one.

(Compact or TI only)

Final step:
Unscrew button for light switch and pull out instrument carrier sideways.

Once you have your cluster out..

Now you should have the unit out of the car. Bring it inside or somewhere with good light and go get your T10 torque screw driver. There’s 5 screws, as shown by this image of the back of the cluster. Two up top, one on each side, and one deep screw in the very middle.

Now look at the faceplate half of the unit (the top half in the picture above). There are three unique, german engineered, “finger screws” holding the faceplate against the glass. It’s the round black circle knobs on each side, and one in the top middle. To unscrew these, simple twist the white part the direction they will move to free the face plate. Here’s a close up of one of the finger screws:

Push them in, when you’re done scroll back up and reverse all the steps, enjoy your sick nasty new gauges!

Sharpie Mod:

All you have to do is take a red sharpie and do one coat of it on the needles, in the end it’ll look like this (obviously do this before you put the gauges back in!!)

Alot of people order chrome rings off E-bay (me included) and get frustrated when they will not clip in right (made in China). They are slightly bigger then the opening—even trying to use super glue, they will not stay in. If this is the case, don’t waste time with super glue–get out the Dremel! I found that by using the round sander on a Dremel and carefully going around the opening of the instrument housing several times, it widens the opening just enough to allow the rings to clip in without glue. It is a great idea to slip a small piece of cardboard in to cover the clear plastic lens from any accidents—-even the most steady had can slip when using the Dremel. Thought this might help those who have not bought the genuine BMW rings. Thanks.nn1

    Re: CLUSTER UPGRADE

So red sharpie over acrylic red paint from hobby shops?

Also can you recommend anywhere (or link) I can get quality chrome rings from?
    Preferably USA or Germany.

    Thanks in advance
